5 Lessons From Starting My First Company

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you may have seen that I recently started a shampoo and conditioner company called King’s Counsel. It has been a wild ride so far, and I can only imagine what’s still to come.

This company has been the first thing to really fulfill my need to conquer since I stopped wrestling. Fighting, lifting, and working towards a degree have all come close, but fallen short. Launching a company has had the correct amount of risk, led me to all new people, and kept me busier than all of the above. I love it.

There are many important lessons to be learned from starting a company. Often times, you think you’ve learned the lesson, but then you get faced with it again and realize that it didn’t take hold the first time, so you have to learn again. I also believe that God puts us through certain tests to remind us of the lessons that we’ve already learned.

Here is a list of some of the things that I have been taught or reminded of during this process:

1 – Dealing with adversity

This is first because I think it is most important. Things rarely, if ever, go the way that you planned. Get used to that, in fact get comfortable with it. This helps you to be prepared for everything that comes your way and helps you to bounce back from failure.

2 – Your network is your most important asset

It isn’t your money, your knowledge, or your possessions, though those things are all important. No one wants to start a company from scratch. It sucks. It’s so much easier when you have people around you who are knowledgeable, experienced, and willing to help. Reach out to them.

3 – Don’t be afraid to market

Sell your product! Send out plugs without shame. The only people who are turned off by you advertising your product or message will be the lukewarm ones. Lukewarm never moved mountains, it never made money, and it certainly never changed the world. You need to be all in, and you want your followers and customers to be all in as well.

Building on this, don’t be afraid to reach out to people. Grow your network, ask people for help. What’s the worst they’ll do, ignore you? Who cares? Move on to the next person. It’s time to get over your anxiety.

4 – You’re in it for the long haul

Stop thinking short term. You aren’t going to be successful right away. This is the case with anything that’s worth doing in life: perfection takes time. You aren’t going to make a quick buck, sell out of your inventory inn the first week, or be profitable from the jump. Play the long game.

5 – Change your mindset

It doesn’t matter what you’re pursuing, whether that’s a company of your own, a promotion at work, or anything else. If you treat it like a hobby, you’re going to get hobby results. Become obsessed. Financial freedom isn’t something that’s achieved by being nonchalant about it. Pursue that goal with a fire in your heart, and you’ll be successful.

These can be applied to any goal. If your goal is to find a wife, then think of yourself as the product. If your goal is to get a promotion at work, then think of your services as the product. Everyone is selling something, your task is to sell your thing at a level above everyone else.
